Summary

The Korean War altered the narrative of helicopter development every bit as much as World War II did and Vietnam and would do. Beyond proving the value of the helicopter on the battlefield to military decision makers, the war altered the acceptance of the helicopter with the general public. What had been an amusing contraption that could guarantee attention by flying a Santa Claus to the opening of a new shopping plaza, now came to be regarded as one of the greatest innovations in battlefield medicine since the advent of penicillin.

While helicopters made inroads on the battlefield, helicopters were finally beginning to -find paying niches in the commercial world. Natural resource exploitation and passenger service were the two most notable applications during this period, though helicopter policing and other applications underwent some promising experiments that foretold later implementations.
